GCAP Global Workshop Event Logistics

The workshop will be held at the Grand Carima Resort and Convention Center located at Endereço Avenida das Cataratas, 4790 Foz do Iguaçu – PR, Brasil.

Date and Time

Regional workshops will be taking place September 30 – October 1. Global workshop main programming will take place from 2 – 4 October 2024. Participants should arrive to the workshop space at 8:00 AM to receive their name badges and get settled.  

The final day (Saturday, October 5) is optional and will offer another networking opportunity for participants while visiting the Iguaçu Falls. You will have indicated your interest in joining this networking day on your registration form. We will provide additional details on transportation and timing for the site visit for those who have signed up for it during the coming weeks. Accommodations

Sponsored participants will have their accommodations booked directly by the sponsoring organization. Please contact the GCAP secretariat if you have any questions.

Self-sponsored participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations and are therefore advised to contact the hotel of their choice directly in order to make their booking as soon as possible. We highly recommend that you book a room at the workshop venue.

Accommodation at the GCAP Global Workshop is being offered by the Grand Carimã at a discounted rate. To access this rate, please follow the steps below:

Meals

For the global workshop, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and coffee breaks will be provided during the three days of the workshop from Wednesday, October 2nd through Friday, October 4th 

Drinking Water 

Tap water is not safe to drink in Brazil. Workshop organizers will provide water for you in jugs placed around the hotel. Please use these to fill your water bottles or drinking glasses. Water bottles in the hotel room are not complimentary and participants will be expected to cover the costs of these bottles if consumed. 

Registration and Identification Badges 

Participants are asked to register and obtain identification badges at the registration desk prior to the opening of the workshop. Registration will start at 8:00 AM on 2 October 2024 at the workshop venue. Kindly bring identification on the first day of the workshop.  

If you are attending our regional workshops in Latin America & Caribbean, Africa and Asia, registration will be on Monday, September 30th. Please hold on to your badge for use at the global workshop as well, but plan to check-in again with organizers on the morning of 2 October.  

Visa and Entry Information for Brazil

We strongly advise participants to contact the appropriate embassy/high commission/honorary consulate as soon as possible in their home countries or stationed abroad immediately for more information on visa requirements. Ground Transportation in Foz do Iguaçu 

Ground transportation to/from the airport to the Grand Carimã will be available at pre-determined dates/times to be announced in the days prior to the workshop. GCAP is not able to provide ground transportation outside of those scheduled dates/times. 

Taxis and Ubers are readily available at your own cost. The hotel is 7 minutes from the airport, 5 minutes from a shopping center and 10 minutes from the center of Foz. There is a bus stop (line 120 – Parque Nacional) and a taxi stand just outside of the hotel.

Insurance

The workshop co-organizers are not responsible for medical, accident and travel insurance. Participants are strongly recommended to obtain comprehensive international travel and medical insurance to cover the full duration of your trip from departure to return to your home country. Please check your country’s travel advice for travelling to Brazil. Hospital facilities that cater to tourists include the Hospitals Padre Germano Lauck, Cataratas and Costa Cavalcanti. 

Vaccines

Yellow fever vaccines are not required for visa application but yet recommended when travelling to specific states in Brazil, Paraná (Foz do Iguaçu region) is not part of this list. Please note that vaccinations requirements may change without prior notice. Currency

The currency is Brazil is the Brazilian Real (R$). Credit cards are widely accepted. ATM machine is available at the hotel. Money exchange facilities are available around the city (K2 Câmbio, Scappini Câmbio, Atlas Tourism and Câmbio). Please check with your bank/ credit/ debit card company to see whether you can use your card(s) in the ATMs in Foz do Iguaçú.

Weather

Foz do Iguaçú has a sub-tropical climate. The workshop takes place during the Southern Hemisphere’s Spring, with temperatures in Foz do Iguaçú cycling between average daily highs of around 82 F (28 C) and lows of 62F (17 C). It is likely to rain at least part of the time, since average precipitation during this period is around 43%. Time

The time zone for Foz do Iguaçu is Brazil Time (BRT or GMT –3).

Electricity

Type N plug sockets are used in Brazil. They have three round pins (see graphic below). Brazil operates on a 127V/220V supply voltage, however Foz do Iguaçu is 127V. The Grand Carimã Hotel operates mostly at 127V, though some spaces have 220V.

Personal Safety Recommendations

Workshop organizers are not responsible for personal belongings. Please be vigilant of your personal safety and belongings by keeping these common safety tips in mind:

  • Take precautions in public places and main tourist attractions
  • Keep valuables (money, jewelry, camera) to a minimum and deposit valuables in hotel safety deposit box.
  • Make a copy of your passport, insurance papers and any other important documents and keep them separately from the originals.
  • Be wary of suspicious situations. Be aware of techniques used by scammers, such as exchanging fake banknotes, credit card scams, offering goods well below market value, among others. Be wary of suspicious situations to avoid falling into traps. When in doubt, seek safe guidance.
  • Accredited tourist guides do not approach tourists on public roads or at the access points to international bridges between Brazil and Argentina and Paraguay. Choose official operators, agencies and professionals. Choose safe services, such as public transport, taxis and other means.
  • Download important content and media in advance. In some border areas, the cell phone network may not work.

Things To Do
  • Iguaçu Falls https://cataratasdoiguacu.com.br (website in Portuguese, English, and Spanish): With more than 275 waterfalls, the Iguaçu Falls form an impressive spectacle of nature. The majestic Devil’s Throat is the largest and most famous of the falls, measuring around 80 meters high. The force of the waters falling vertically creates a mist that envelops the landscape, providing an incredible visual spectacle.

A joint work of Brazilians and Paraguayans, Itaipu was considered one of the Wonders of Modern Engineering by the Civil Engineering Association of the United States.
