Carbon Footprint Measurement: Guidance, Trainings and Recommendations – Testimonial
This document is the final result of the technical assistance provided to the Ministry of Economy of El Salvador (MINEC), as part of the support of the Global Action Climate Partnership (GCAP) and the Climate Action Accelerator of the Regional Platform for Low Emission and Development Strategies (LEDS LAC), together with the Resource Efficiency Working Group of the Platform.
The objective of the assistance was to develop a methodology and training plan for calculating the carbon footprint of companies in the textile industry. GCAP is a global network of governments, organizations and individuals, created to facilitate the design and implementation of low-emission development strategies (LEDS) and the setting of ambitious climate targets.
The Climate Action Accelerator is a service offered by the LEDS LAC Platform that provides rapid, high-quality, short-term technical assistance to developing countries. It is a service funded by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). LEDS LAC is the regional LEDS GP platform for Latin America and the Caribbean. It currently has more than 2,900 members and, through the operation of Communities of Practice and different face-to-face and virtual activities, provides spaces for exchange, dialogue and collaboration between governmental, non-governmental and international experts on topics of relevance for resilient development. The Platform Secretariat is operated by Libélula Instituto para el Cambio Global.
For its part, Asociación Sustentar leads the Resource Efficiency Working Group of the LEDS LAC Regional Platform, which aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences among key actors in the region, and support actions and strategies to efficiently manage resources and design systems to reduce consumption and waste, to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and NDCs.
In this context, the Ministry of Economy of El Salvador requested support from the LEDS LAC Platform to develop: 1) A practical guide for measuring the carbon footprint in the textile sector; 2) Theoretical and practical training for companies adhering to the Clean Production Agreement; 3) Recommendations for companies to improve the implementation of the knowledge imparted during the training. In response to this request, the LEDS LAC Platform coordinated the hiring of Belén Alejandra Silva to carry out the technical assistance service.
