Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning in Argentina: Roadmap to achieve the national target by 2030 – Testimonial

6am, September 26th, 2024

This document is the final result of the technical assistance provided to the Secretariat of Transport of Argentina, as part of the support offered by the Regional Platform for Low Emission and Development Strategies (LEDS LAC) in collaboration with Asociación Sustentar. The objective of the assistance was to develop a Roadmap for the 80 most populated urban areas in the country to have a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) designed, approved and in the implementation stage.

The Climate Action Accelerator is a service offered by the LEDS LAC Platform that provides rapid, high-quality, short-term technical assistance to developing countries. It is a service funded by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

LEDS LAC is a network of leading transformational organizations and individuals working on the promotion, design and implementation of LEDS for resilient, low-emission development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Addressing the challenges posed by climate change requires the integration of mitigation and adaptation objectives into development policies and strategies. At the same time, achieving the economic and social aspirations of our countries requires taking these challenges into account. For this reason, LEDS LAC promotes the formulation and implementation of national, sub-national and sectoral strategies that respond at the same time to the triple objective of promoting development, reducing emissions and increasing resilience.

These Low Emission and Resilient Development Strategies (LEDS) enable countries to move towards sustainable development and meet their climate commitments. For this reason, LEDS LAC supports leaders who are driving change from governments, civil society, the private sector and the international community. Among the activities and services provided by LEDS LAC is the Climate Action Accelerator.

The Transport Working Group (TWG) of the LEDS LAC Platform was launched in 2014 and provides support for capacity building, and improvement in the design and implementation of NDCs in the region, in the priority issues identified by its members, through its two Communities of Practice (CoP): Electric Mobility and Sustainable Logistics.

For its part, Asociación Sustentar coordinates the Assistance Accelerator through which support is provided to the LEDS LAC Platform in the general coordination of the technical assistance service.

In this context, the Secretariat of Transport of Argentina requested support from the TWG to outline a “Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning in Argentina: Roadmap to achieve the National Goal 2030”. In response to this request, the LEDS LAC Secretariat coordinated the hiring of Laura Pagani to carry out the technical assistance service.
